Balliboe

An ancient division of land dating back to pre-Norman times, the common English translation for a variety of small local land units that varied in name and meaning throughout Ireland. Roughly synonymous with ‘Townland’. Balliboes were economic units based on the amount of food the land would provide, thus poorer units were larger as more land was required to produce the same amount of food as a smaller but higher quality unit.
